This Postpartum Sitz Bath provides herbal support for tender tissue, deep repair, and general perineal discomfort.
Birth asks a lot of the body. Swelling, stitches, hemorrhoids, bruising, and general soreness are common companions in the early days. I formulated this blend to encourage comfort, cleanliness, and steady healing.
Calendula, yarrow, plantain, and lavender work together as a classic vulnerary combination: soothing irritation, supporting tissue tone, and helping the body protect itself while it rebuilds.
Why these herbs?
Calendula is one of the most respected topical healing plants in Western herbal practice. It supports rapid repair, helps calm local inflammation, and discourages bacterial growth. Herbalists often describe it as helping to “clean the wound from the inside out,” supporting healthy movement of blood and lymph in the tissue while the skin knits back together.
Plantain brings cooling, moistening relief to hot, irritated areas. It’s demulcent, gently astringent, and naturally antiseptic, with a traditional reputation for drawing out debris while encouraging the skin to close and restore.
Yarrow helps tighten and tone lax or swollen tissue. Rich in volatile oils, it offers antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory actions while supporting circulation to the area. Its properties are useful for perineal healing as well as hemorrhoids.
Lavender adds calm to the equation. It’s antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and widely used for pain relief and gentle antimicrobial support. It also makes the whole experience feel a little more exhale-worthy.
Together, these plants create a soak that soothes, cleanses, and supports the body’s own repair process.
Ways to use:
Brew a strong tea using 1–2 tablespoons of herbs per 1 cup of water. Most uses require more than a cup, so plan to double or triple as needed. Steep covered for 15–20 minutes, and strain well.
You can then:
- Add to a sitz bath and soak for about 15 minutes
- Pour into the bathtub for a full-body immersion
- Use in a peri bottle for after you use the bathroom
- Transfer to a spray bottle to apply over perineal or cesarean stitches.
- Soak pads and freeze to make a cooling soothing padsicle
